What is Ultram? Ultram is medication used to treat or prevent pain. It is the brand of the generic medicine Tramadol (TRA-ma-doll). Ultram is not a non steroidal anti inflammatory drug, nor is it a narcotic. It works by binding to certain opioid pain receptors in the body and blocking the reuptake of the neuro chemicals norepinephrine and serotonin. It modifies the pain messages sent, resulting in pain relief for the user.
This medication was introduced in 1995. At that time no control was recommended based on review of its uncontrolled use in 40 other countries. However, once released in the U.S., abuse became readily apparent. Ultram is now known to be addictive even though it is a "non-narcotic" pain reliever. If it is taken in large doses it can interfere with the user’s ability to breathe, especially if taken with alcohol.
